How to Print from HP Printer with Google Home

HP arguably leads the way when it comes to voice-controlled printing. If you have the right printer by this manufacturer you can further simplify your printing tasks with the use of voice assistants, such as Google Home.

Once the use of voice commands is enabled, you only need to speak to have a variety of things printed. Here’s a guide on how to print from your HP printer with Google Home.

According to HP, you are going to need an English account on Google set up for any of the following:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • India
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Your printer should be connected to your wireless network and must not be the type that connects via a USB cable. It should support Web Services and Google Cloud Print service.

Your Google Home account must be connected to the same wireless network as your printer. You need an Android device running OS version 6.0+ or the Google Assistant app, if you use an Apple device (running iOS 9 or later).

You will also have to download the Google Assistant from the Play Store if you use an Android device running an OS version earlier than 6.0.

Your computer should have the Google’s Chrome web browser installed if you will be doing this on a Windows, Mac or Linux computer.

Finally, you need to have an HP account and must have added your printer to it. Activate Web Services on your machine to get your printer code and head over to the HP Connected website to register an account, if you don’t have one already, and then add your printer.

The Setup Process

Once you have all requirements above covered, proceed as follows to set up your printer to work with Google Home:

  • Open the Google Assistant by long pressing the Home icon on your Android 6.0+ device. You need to install and then open the app if you’re using an iOS device or an Android device running older OS version.

  • After the app opens, tap on the Explore icon – the one looking like a compass – to open up the Explore screen.

  • Type ‘HP printer’ into the search field and tap on HP Printer from the search results.

  • In the HP Printer screen that follows, tap on Link.

  • Check the box next to ‘I agree with’ to allow the HP Printer Skill to connect to your HP account and collect necessary information. Next, tap on HP Account below ‘Connect with.’

  • Provide necessary information on the new screen and sign in to your HP account.

  • Select the printer you want to use with Google Home and then tap on Connect.

With that final step, you are done with setting up your HP printer for printing with Google’s virtual assistant.

Printing with Google Home

From this point on, you only need to ensure that your printer is on and in ‘Ready’ state to print with your voice. Begin by saying, ‘Hey Google, talk to my HP printer,’ to link the assistant to your machine.

With Google Home, you can print a wide range of everyday documents, according to HP. These include forms, colouring pages, calendars and games.

If you need more information on what you can print and how to, you can tell Google Home to print you a help page. Say: ‘Hey Google, ask HP printer to print a help page.’

It is possible that the voice assistant might tell you that it doesn’t know how to fulfil a request on some occasions. In such a case, you simply need to follow steps similar to those for setting up to unlink the HP Printer Skill from your account and then link it again.
