How Do I Stop My Printer Ejecting One Blank Sheet?

blank page, windows, mac, print preview, stop my printer ejecting one blank page,

There can be occasions when your printer starts to act funny, such as when it ejects one black sheet after every print. This isn’t really a big problem, but only an unnecessary inconvenience.

If you are currently experiencing this issue or have to deal with it in future, here are some suggestions that can help to stop your printer ejecting one blank sheet.

Preview Before Printing

The ‘Print Preview’ is one feature some printer users need to use more often. There are certain formatting issues that may be in any document you intend printing and which you can easily miss. This feature can help you to detect such and take appropriate steps on them.

For example, formatting may lead to an extra blank page being added to your document. Content could also be shifted beyond the margins in formatted documents. Print Preview enables you to spot these issues and do something about them.

How you preview a document depends on what program you are working with – for example, whether it’s a Word or PDF application or a web browser. In Microsoft Word, you’d usually need to click on the Office icon, place your mouse on ‘Print’ and select ‘Print Preview’ from the displayed options. The option is usually in the Print menu.

Skip Blank Pages

If you won’t always have time to be checking for blank pages before printing, you can set your printer to omit them when printing documents.

Below are the steps to follow to do this on Windows and Mac. These are applicable to an Epson XP Series machine. But you may also apply same to some other printer models and brands, with some modifications, if the feature is supported.

Windows

  • Click on the Start Menu and search for ‘printer.’

  • Select ‘Devices and Printers’ in the search results.

  • Locate your printer in the list and right-click on it. Select Printing Preferences.

  • Select the Maintenance tab.

  • Click on ‘Extended Settings.’

  • Turn on the Skip Blank Page setting

  • Click OK to save the changes.

Mac

  • Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences.

  • Open Printers & Scanners. This may also be shown as Print & Scan or Print or Fax, depending on your operating system version.

  • Select your printer and then click on Options & Supplies.

  • Click on the Options or Driver tab in the next window.

  • Look for the Skip Blank Page option and turn it on.

  • Click OK to apply the change and close the window.

On Brother printers, there is a setting related to blank page called a Separator page. Your machine will eject one blank sheet after every print, if you have this feature turned on. Here is what you do to turn it off via the control panel of your printer:

  • Use the Down arrow button to navigate through the menu, select Paper Tray and press OK.

  • Use the Down arrow button again to select ‘Separator page’ and then press OK.

  • With the aid of an Up or Down arrow button, turn the setting to ‘Off’ and press OK.

Your printer should stop ejecting one blank sheet when you print after making this change.

Uninstall and Reinstall Your Printer Software

The solution to this problem might lie in fixing your printer software in some cases. It could be that this has become defective, meaning you need to get a better one.

You may need to first remove USB cable from your printer – a prompt will notify you during the process if the cable needs to be connected. Then proceed with these steps to uninstall the software:

  • Go to the list of programs installed on your computer. On Windows, you can locate this by navigating to Control Panel > Programs and Features.

  • Click on the name of your printer.

  • Next, click on ‘Uninstall’ or ‘Yes.’ Wait for the removal process to complete while following on-screen prompts.

  • Restart your computer after the process completes.

When your computer finishes rebooting, it’s now time to get new printer software. Follow these steps:

  • Visit the support page on the website of your printer’s manufacturer and find your way to the section for downloading software and drivers.

  • Type in the model of your printer and search. If you use an HP printer, select Printer if you see a ‘Let’s identify your product’ page, type in your printer model and click on Submit. There may be need to change the operating system option if the correct one for your computer isn’t already selected.

  • Click on Download to get the software on your computer. You may need to check for the download link under a ‘Driver’ heading.

  • After downloading, locate the file, double-click on it and follow on-screen instructions to install.

Update Printer Firmware

If updating the printer software on your computer doesn’t resolve ejection of one blank sheet, you should consider updating the firmware version on your machine as well. It might be faulty or outdated.

You also need to visit your printer manufacturer’s website and follow steps similar to those described above to do this. But you need to connect your machine to your computer before starting this time.

Specify your printer model and set your operating system, if necessary, as before. Then continue as follows to update your printer software:

  • Select Firmware option on the ‘driver and software’ download page and proceed to download. Your machine already has the latest version, if you cannot see an option to download firmware.

  • Locate the downloaded file on your computer and double-click it to begin installation.

  • When the serial number of your printer displays in the HP Printer Update window, check the box next to it. Click the name of the printer on Mac. Then click on Update or Continue, depending on your OS type.

  • Click on OK when the updating process completes.

Print Directly

You may also be able to stop your printer ejecting one blank sheet by printing directly, according to HP. This means making print jobs to skip the print spooler.

Here’s how to set your printer to do this on Windows:

  • Open Devices and Printers.

  • Locate and right-click on your printer. Then select ‘Printer properties.’

  • Click on the Advanced tab.

  • Activate the ‘Print directly to the printer’ option.

  • Click Apply and then on OK.

We expect that one of the suggestions here should help you stop your printer ejecting one blank sheet.
